Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena Kinta'nija Peres 16 April 1971 - - March 31, 1995) was known by her mononym, Selena was an American Tejano singer. Called the "Queen of Tejano music" her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the latter half of the 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third in 2020 on their "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", which was basing it on Latin songs as well as Latin albums. Her attire earned her the name "Tejano Madonna". Her fashion choices make her one of the top Latin artists. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. She was often criticised in the 1980s , and was denied bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, which is a largely male-dominated genre. After receiving the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained popularity. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and released her debut album self-titled in the same year. At the time, her brother became her principal music producer as well as songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992), which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. The album was praised by music critics as being the "breakthrough" album of her musical career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was one of her biggest famous songs. Live! (1993) was awarded Best American/Mexican Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to be awarded this distinction. Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It became one of America's most listened-to Latin albums. It was widely credited with the initiation of Tejano music's very first commercial phase. It was one of Latin music's most popular subgenres.
